Gammill longarm quilting machine at Raney House

Darlene Dubicki has been machine quilting for others for four years. Her services include: piecing together the backing, making the binding, sewing the binding on, hand stitching the binding down on the back. Darlene charges 1½¢ per square inch for labor. Her batting is a 80/20 cotton/poly mix (which she prefers over all others) and is $14/yard. Also, she charges $6 for one color, $11 for varigated thread or color changes. There is no discount for sewing one's own binding down on the back.

When you're preparing a quilt for Darlene to finish, please note the following tips.

  1. Make sure all the seams are sewn and there are no little gaps where the needle didn't catch the fabric. These “holes” can cause many problems with the longarm machine.
  2. Make sure your quilt is ironed properly as you go along. The general rule is to try to iron your ¼" seam allowance toward the darker fabric. You can't always do that when two seams end up going in the same direction (too much bulk), but press at each step of your piecing, and again when the entire top is completed.
  3. Please trim all threads off your quilt top! These include those on top as well as the ones underneath. If your quilt has white fabric in it the threads underneath will show through.
